SHERMAN, Texas – Winning their 19
th match of the year in a five-set thriller, East Texas Baptist University came away with the 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 12-25, 15-7 (3-2) victory over Austin College. ETUB is 9-2 against non-ASC opponents as they move to 19-3 on the year.
Three players recorded 10+ kills as
Graycee Mosley earned a double-double with 18 kills and 21 digs. Rachel Spicer added 14 kills and
Anita Hancock had 13 kills.
Lexi Moody (25 assists) and
Sydney Temple (22 assists) combined for 47 assists.
Lillie Hill added 21 digs as
Taylor Poore had 14.
ETBU hit just .176 in the match with their best set in set five with a .529 hitting percentage. They had 17 kills in set two and combined for 61 overall.
Set one was the closest set of the five as AC took it, 25-23. AC went up, 12-7, and 17-10, before a five-point run cut the lead to two, 17-15, with a kill by Hancock and a
McKenzie Mansell service ace. ETBU came within one, 22-21, on two points from AC errors and a Spicer kill and then was within one, again, 24-23, on another AC error before Kangaroos won on a kill, 25-23.
ETBU took a 3-0 lead in set two and went up 14-8 on a Spicer kill. AC pulled to within four, 18-16, but ETBU scored seven of the last nine points for the 25-18 set win tying it at one. Spicer and
Avery Reid posted a block and then a
Hannah Perry kill ended the set.
It went back and forth in set three as both teams had short leads. ETBU went up 10-6 but AC came back and tied it at 11. AC then retook the lead, 14-12, only to see ETBU retake the lead, 17-16, on a Kangaroo error. AC had a 20-18 lead when Moody and Spicer had back-to-back kill and a Hancock service ace made it, 21-20. AC scored the next two points for a 22-21 lead but a Spicer kill, Perry block, and a Reid killed put ETBU up, 2-1, in the 25-22 win.
The worse set for ETBU came in set four hitting negative .067. Two large runs by AC distanced their lead as they went up 21-10. They finished with a 25-12 win to tie the match at two sets a piece.
It was a battle early on as ETBU held a one-point lead, 4-3. At that point, ETBU went on a 7-0 run for an 11-3 advantage. Five of the seven points were kills coming from Mosley and Hancock. AC earned their fourth point but a Kangaroo service error and a Hancock block made it 13-4. Reid scored ETBU's final two points on kills for the match win, 15-7.
ETBU will host Howard Payne University in ASC play on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in Ornelas Gym.
