MARSHALL, Texas — On a gorgeous night at Cornish field, a late charge by the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team came up short to McMurry University, 3-2. ETBU is now 1-5-4 on the year and 0-3-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
The Tigers looked sharp throughout the match but couldn't find the right moment to take charge of the match. ETBU posted more shots, with 17 to the Warhawks' 14, and were even in shots on goal with five each.
Aram Mijares and
Garrett Garvin both scored in the match, while
Brenden Gajewski led the team in shots with six. Garvin also led in shots on goal at two.
Anthony Lozada had a pair of saves.
ETBU came out firing and kept the pressure on the Warhawks throughout the match. The scoring opened in the final minute of the first half, when McMurry broke the deadlock to send the match to halftime at 1-0.
McM would double their lead in the 70
th minute, 2-0, but the Tigers kept pressing. Garvin would pull one back for the Tigers two minutes later to make it 2-1 in the 72
nd minute. ETBU seemed to take the momentum, but gave up a penalty thereafter, which gave McM a two-goal lead on the penalty kick. Mijares would find himself with space to shoot from outside the box following a corner and put it top bins to bring the score to within one, 3-2, in the 85
th minute. ETBU kept fighting hard in the final five minutes, but were unable to find the net again as McM won, 3-2.
The Tigers will host Hardin-Simmons University this Saturday, October 7
th, at 7:30 p.m.
