MARSHALL, Texas – Dominance in Ornelas Gym continued on Friday night for East Texas Baptist University as they moved to 12-0 at home in a 3-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons University, 25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 25-11. ETBU is now 22-3 overall and 12-1 in the American Southwest Conference. If they can defeat McMurry on Saturday, they will tie Mary Hardin-Baylor for the ASC regular season championship.
Coming away with 52 kills and a .269 hitting percentage, ETBU's best set came in set four hitting .500 with 13 kills and one error on 24 attacks.
Graycee Mosley was the only Tiger in double digit kills at 21 recording another double-double with 16 digs. Both
Anita Hancock and
Avery Reid added eight kills as
Lillie Hill finished with 16 digs. Hancock also had four blocks as the team finished with 12 overall.
The first 12 points of set one went back and forth with a 6-6 tie. ETBU then unloaded with 11 straight points for a 17-6 advantage. There were six kills in the run combined from Mosley and Hancock and two service aces from
McKenzie Mansell. ETBU then went up 21-9 on a
Lexi Moody service ace but the Cowgirls battled back to within five, 24-19, before Mosley finished off the set with a kills, 24-19.
Set two was a mirror of set one with the score tied several times. Tied at 13, ETBU scored four straight points to take the momentum, 17-13. A kill and a service ace from Moody was a big part in the four points along with a Reid kill. After HSU scored one point, ETBU reeled off five more points as Rachel Spicer, Reid and
Hannah Perry had kills for a 22-14 lead. Once again, HSU stopped the run with one point but ETBU went up 2-0 in the set as a Mosley kill and two service aces from Hill put the set at 25-15.
HSU took a 6-0 lead in set three and never looked back. ETBU didn't have the lead in the set and was within one, 15-14, before HSU went on a 3-0 run (18-14). Three straight points on HSU errors gave ETBU 21 points as they were within one, 22-21, but the Cowgirls scored the final three points to pull within one, 25-21.
Down 3-2 to start set four, ETBU scored 14 of the next 15 points for a 16-4 lead. They had a 10-0 run to go up, 16-4, with two service aces from Mosley, two kills by Hancock, and a kill from Reid. A HSU attack error put ETBU up, 20-7, but HSU the Cowgirls did score four more points to make it 24-11. Mosley then ended the match with her 21
st kill, 25-11.
ETBU will end the regular season on Saturday a 1:00 p.m. as they host McMurry University and recognize
Lillie Hill on Senior Day.
