CONWAY, Ark. – Holding Hendrix College to just three points in the five-minute overtime period, East Texas Baptist University won their second game in a row over the break, 74-68. They are now 5-7 after defeating Hendrix in Arkansas and will play again on January 4.
Four players were in double figures as
Darry Moore earned his fourth double-double of the year and third in the last four games. He finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds going 8-of-18 from the floor. Both
Michael Roberts and
Joshua R Davis had 11 points as Roberts gave four assists.
Jaden Conner added 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
Kurt Labeaud came away with nine points, five rebounds, and three assists. Hendrix's Daniel Cobb led all scorers with 26 points.
ETBU had their best game of the year holding onto the ball with only eight turnovers gaining 12 steals and forcing 15 Hendrix turnovers. The 15 Hendrix turnovers turned into 13 ETBU points as the Tigers also had 40 points in the paint.
Overall, ETBU shot 40 percent from the floor, 25 percent from the arc, and 60 percent from the line. Hendrix finished making 38 percent of their shots, was 11-of-24 from three-point range (45 percent), and shot 72 percent from the stripe. ETBU won the rebounding battle, 45-40.
Both halves went toe-to-toe as Hendrix held a 33-32 advantage at the half. ETBU then scored 33 points in the second half to Hendrix's 32 for a 65-65 tie forcing overtime. Up 64-63 with 27 seconds left in the game,
Ryan Elzy made one-of-two from the line for a two-point lead, 65-63. With 11 seconds left in the game, ETBU fouled Hendrix as they converted both free throws to tie the game. ETBU missed a last second three-pointer for the win forcing overtime.
It took over two minutes for either team to score in overtime a combined five shots were missed in that time. It was Moore with a put-back dunk off a rebound to give ETBU a 67-65 lead at the 2:53 mark. Just over 20 seconds later, Hendrix hit a three-pointer for the lead, 68-67. ETBU missed their next two shots on the same possession but a rebound and put-back by Elzy gave the Tigers the lead for good, 69-68, with 2:02 left to play.
Jaden Conner made it 71-68 on a shot a 1:32 and followed up with two free throws made at 1:07 for the five-point lead, 73-68. Hendrix missed two shots in the next 50 seconds as
Jayden Williams was fouled with 18 seconds left. He followed making one-of-two free throws for the 74-68 final.
ETBU will host Sul Ross State in regional play on Thursday, January 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Ornelas Gym.
