PREVIEW | MBB | ETBU Finishes 2022-23 Regular Season Traveling to UO, UTD

MARSHALL, Texas - Heading into their final week of regular season play, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team will be traveling to the University of the Ozarks and the University of Texas Dallas. ETBU was recently ranked fifth in the NCAA region X rankings. 
 
The Tigers are currently 18-5 overall and in third in the American Southwest Conference with a 12-4 record. ETBU defeated Sul Ross State on Thursday, February 9, 81-67. In that game ETBU shot 48% overall, 36% beyond the arc, and 74% on the line, only allowing the Lobos to shoot 26% behind the three-point arc. They followed that win with a Senior Day victory against Howard Payne University 99-81, shooting 55% from the floor with five three-pointers. 
 
Leading the Tigers is Darry Moore, Aaron Gregg, and Kevin Charles. Moore was recently named the ASC player of the week (Feb. 7-12) averaging 31 points and nine rebounds per game while shooting 62% from the floor and 93% on the line. Against Sul Ross State, Moore led the team with a double-double of 28 points and 13 rebounds. He then had a career-high of 34 points against Howard Payne on Saturday. He is currently second in the ASC in scoring averaging 21.2 points per game, second in the shooting (62.3%), and sixth in rebounds (6.8 per game). 
 
Gregg currently leads the Tigers and the ASC averaging 6.1 assists per game with 134 on the year. He also leads the team in three-pointers (46) and is shooting 47% beyond the arc. In the game against Sul Ross State, he recorded a double-double of 13 assists and 11 points, as well as eight rebounds. He went on to record a triple-double, the first in over ten years of program history, with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists against Howard Payne on Senior Day. This season, he is shooting 47.7% overall, 70.8% on the line, and averages 4.9 rebounds per game. 
 
Charles is leading the Tigers in rebounds with 159 averaging 7.6 per game. He is first on the team and the ASC with 33 season blocks averaging 1.6 per game. Against Sul Ross, he recorded 18 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. He followed putting up 19 points, six rebounds, and one steal against Howard Payne. This season, he is shooting 62.2% overall and averages 14.4 points per game.
 
A worthy mention for the Tigers is Kurt Labeaud as he had a career-high of seven rebounds and led the team in both games with three steals against Sul Ross and a career-high of four against Howard Payne. 
 
ETBU will be facing Ozarks on Thursday, February 16th at 7:30 p.m. in Clarksville, Ark.. Ozarks is currently 8-15 overall and 3-13 in the ASC. The two teams last saw each other in January, where the Tigers won 87-62. Ozarks previously came out on top in February of 2021, 62-58. Leading the Eagles is Josh Ukpe with 326 points averaging 15.5 points per game. He is shooting 47.6% from the floor and 35.8% beyond the arc while averaging 6.8 rebounds per game. 
 
The Tigers will be returning back to Texas to end their regular season at UT Dallas on Saturday, February 18th at 3:00 p.m. UT Dallas is currently 19-4 overall and 14-2 in the ASC tied for first place with UMHB. The two teams last faced off in January, where the Comets won 75-69. The Tigers last came out victorious in January of 2021, 69-60. Leading UT Dallas is Kyle Poershcke with 442 points averaging 19.2 points per and six rebounds per game. He is shooting 51.7% from the floor and 38.5% beyond the arc and has 36 steals.
