CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Dominating the game on the road in Arkansas, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team defeated the University of the Ozarks, 77-55. The Tigers are now 19-5 overall and 13-4 in the American Southwest Conference tied for second place.
Leading the Tigers was
Brooke Webster with 13 points, five rebounds, and one assists.
Alexis Purcell followed recording 11 points and three assists.
Mollie Dittmar led the team with six rebounds, putting up six points and one steal.
Kaia Williams had a team high four assists as well as recording seven points. ETBU finished the game shooting 49% from the floor, 39% beyond the arc, and 80% on the line. Ozarks shot 33% overall, 23% outside the three-point circle, and 80% on the line.
The Eagles started the game with a three within the first 15 seconds, 3-0. ETBU followed with a driving layup by Purcell, 3-2, to cut the lead to one. The Tigers trailed until a layup by Goynes set the score, 8-7, ending the only lead Ozarks would hold at 6:59.
Jayla Hall had a driving layup to give ETBU a five point lead with 5:35 left, 12-7. Ozarks brought a jumper with 4:52 left, lowering the Tiger lead to three, 12-9. Shots from Purcell,
Bridget Upton, and
Jay Levy set the score at 18-9. ETBU hit their double-digit lead with a fast break jump shot by Upton with 4:01 left, 21-9. Dittmar had a second chance layup with just under two minutes to go for a15-point lead, 25-10. The quarter ended with free throws by Goynes, 27-10, as ETBU was up 17 points after one quarter.
Ozarks put the first points on the board in the second quarter with a jump shot at 9:24, 27-12.
Hannah Matthews reacted quickly with a layup at 8:58, 29-12, to keep the lead at 17. The Eagles made three shots on the line, 29-15, to come within 14 points. After a minute with no score changes, Williams had a pull up jump shot, 31-15. An Eagle three-pointer brought the Tiger lead down to 11 with 5:03 left, 31-20. Ozarks followed with two free-throws to come within nine points, 31-22. With 3:14 left, the Tigers made it a 10-point lead, 34-24, with a layup by Webster. Shots from Matthews and Upton pushed the lead back to 14 points, 38-24, with 1:47 left. The quarter ended with a layup by the Eagles, 38-28, as they went into the half trailing ETBU by 10.
Continuing with the trend, Ozarks added the first change to the board in the third quarter with a free-throw, 38-29. White followed with a three-point jumper with 9:04 left, 41-29, for a 12-point lead. Webster followed with another shot outside the arc with 8:00 left, 45-29. A layup by Purcell gave ETBU a 20-point lead at 5:52, 49-29. Ozarks had two shots on the line, but
Chloe Rogers reacted with a turnaround jumper at 5:05, 51-31, to keep the lead at 20. The Eagles lowered the lead with two threes, 51-37, to come within 14. Shots from White, Levy, and Williams brought the ETBU lead back to 20 with just under a minute left, 59-39. The quarter ended with a free throw by Hall, 60-39, as ETBU was up 21 points.
The last quarter began with a layup by the Eagles, 60-43. Williams then hit a three-pointer at 8:11, 63-43, to go back up by 20 points. The Tiger lead was lowered to 13, again, with 7:01 left. A minute and a half went by with no scoring but a shot from outside the arc by Purcell set the score 66-50. Levy took two shots on the line at 4:59, 68-50, to keep an 18-point lead. The Eagles brought two shots in the paint to come within 15, 69-54, at 2:59. Webster had a layup drawing a foul with 2:40 left, 71-54, for a 17-point lead. A layup by Levy and free-throws by Purcell brought the ETBU lead to 23 with just over a minute left, 77-54. The game ended with an Eagle free-throw, 77-55.
ETBU will finish the regular season this Saturday, February 18, at 1:00 pm at the University of Texas Dallas.
