PREVIEW | MBB | ETBU Facing LETU in ASC Tourney First-Round Game

MARSHALL, Texas – Back in the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2019-20, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team will be hosting LeTourneau University on Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 pm in a first-round game. ETBU ended the regular season 20-5 overall are the #3 seed in the ASC Tournament. 
 
This is the second straight trip to the ASC Tournament under head coach Chris Lovell in his third season. Last year, ETBU fell to Texas Dallas in the first round of the eight-team tournament. This year, the ASC switched to a six-team tournament with first-round games for seeds no.3 through no. 6. This is the 15th ASC Tournament appearance for ETBU as they have played in three championship games winning the title in 2015. Overall, ETBU is 9-14 in the ASC Tournament.
 
Last week ETBU took on the University of the Ozarks and the University of Texas Dallas. ETBU defeated Ozarks 87-70, shooting 60% from the floor, 56% from beyond the arc. The Tigers followed taking down ASC leader Texas Dallas, 74-72, while shooting 51% overall and 86% on the line.
 
Leading ETBU is Aaron Gregg, Darry Moore, Kevin Charles, and Ryan Elzy. Gregg was named ASC Player of the Week averaging 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists over the week. He currently leads the conference with 153 assists, averaging 6.4 per game. He also leads the Tigers shooting 47% beyond the arc recording 42 steals. Against Ozarks, he had 18 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists, shooting 47% from the floor. He continued with 13 points, 10 assists, and five steals against UTD shooting 57% overall. This season, he has shot 48% overall and averages 18.5 points per game. 
 
Moore currently leads the team and is second in the ASC for scoring and shooting averaging 21.3 points per game and shooting 63% from the floor. Against Ozarks, he posted 20 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, shooting 77% from the floor. He continued leading the team against UTD with 25 points and five rebounds shooting 73%. He currently leads the team, with Charles, with 169 rebounds. 
 
Against Ozarks Charles recorded 10 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. He followed with 20 points, five rebounds, and two assists against UTD shooting 80% from the floor. He is currently leading not only the Tigers but the ASC with 36 season blocks and is fourth in the ASC at 7.3 rebounds per game and third in field goal percentage (63%). 
 
Elzy made a big impact this past week, leading the team against Ozarks with 21 points and four rebounds. This season, he is shooting 51% from the floor, 39% beyond the arc, and averages 9.6 points per game. He sits second on the team with 39 steals. 
 
LETU is currently 12-13 overall and finished sixth in the ASC at 9-9. ETBU last saw LETU on February 4th, where the Tigers won 66-61. LETU last won in December, 70-65. Leading the Yellowjackets is Deonte Jackson with 515 points averaging 20.6 per game which is fourth in the ASC.He is currently shooting 48% from the floor, 38% beyond the arc, and 85% on the line this season. 
 
The winner of Tuesday's game will advance on to the ASC Tournament semi-finals game on Friday, February 24th at 5:00 against UTD in Belton.
