ABILENE, Texas – Sweeping through the matches for a 9-0 victory, East Texas Baptist University dominated McMurry University in crossover play for the American Southwest Conference. ETBU is now 4-2 overall and it was also the first win over McMurry since 2019.
Doubles play came a bit harder for ETBU as two teams won 8-5 in their matches.
Jake Gibson and
Jacob Daniell came away with an 8-5 win over Nicholas Villalovos and Reid Smith at number one. Then, at number three,
Zachary Couch and
Carson Crow won 8-5 over Jason Cabe and Dylan Bryant. Same Black and Bruno Ferro Brocanelli breezed through the number two match, 8-1, over Eh Ruh Soe and Alfredo Avila.
There were two matches in singles that went to tie breakers as ETBU won them both. Black held onto a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win at number one over Smith.
Slade Austin then won the number three singles, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 in a tiebreaker for another point.
Brocanelli won the number two match, 6-2, 7-5, over Villalovos while Gibson took the number four match, 6-1, 6-0, vs. Avila. Couch gave ETBU a point at number five, 6-3, 6-4, over Ty Edwards and Daniell won the number six match, 6-4, 6-0.
ETBU will take on Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
