MARSHALL, Texas – It was a beautiful day at Woods Field for James Morgan Day as #21/24 East Texas Baptist University bounced back to sweep the Saturday double header over Texas Lutheran, 4-2, and 14-4. ETBU is now 10-6 and won three of their four double header series this year.
Sayers Collins earned the win in game one while
Hayden Robichaux was the game two winner. ETBU had 21 hits in the double header sweep as
Ben Lea led the team with four.
Nick Massarini,
Austin Barry,
Carson Wilson,
Jordan Hara, and
Brett Wagner all had three hits on the day. Massarini, Hara, and Wagner all collected three RBI.
Game 1
ETBU 4, TLU 2
In the first game, the seven-inning game of the series, Collins continued to dominate on the mound with eight strikeouts allowing just two hits and one earned run. Barry was 2-of-2 with a RBI as
Jacob Evangelista,
Jake Miller, and Massarini all had a RBI.
It was a three-run second inning that put ETBU in front and that is all Collins would need on the mound. Barry doubled in Lea for the first run and then Massarini doubled in Barry to make it 2-0. Evangelista finished out the scoring with a double bringing in Massarini. TLU earned a run in the fourth but Miller recorded the sixth double of the game scoring Barry making it 4-1. One run was scored in the fifth on a passed ball as TLU fell, 4-2.
Game 2
ETBU 14, TLU 4
The nine-inning game was shortened to seven due to the 10-run rule in the final game of the series. ETBU run-ruled TLU, 14-4, to take the series, two games to one. Three pitchers were used as Robichaux started and received the win moving to 2-1 on the year. He went four innings coming away with two strikeouts giving up four earned runs.
Peyton Miller worked the fifth and sixth innings allowing no hits or runs and
Matthew Irwin closed the seventh with a strikeout and no hits.
Wilson, Hara, Wagner, Lea, and Massarini all had two hits. Hara led the way with three RBI while Wagner Massarini, and
Jase Jones recorded two RBI, and Evangelista, Wilson, Barry, and Miller all had one RBI.
TLU came out strong in the first inning scoring two but ETBU topped that with nine runs in the bottom of the first setting the tone the rest of the way. ETBU then added a run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the seventh to end the game. It was Miller's home run that ended the game to put ETBU up by 10, 14-4.
ETBU will next play on Tuesday at Hendrix College.
