BROWNWOOD, Texas – Splitting the American Southwest Conference double header on Saturday afternoon, East Texas Baptist University won the final game, 6-4, in extra innings over Howard Payne University. ETBU fell in game one of the double header, 2-1, in a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning. ETBU is now 12-8 and 7-2 in the ASC.
Peyton Miller won the final game in relief going the final 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Sayers Collins took the loss in game one recording 10 strikeouts.
Game 1
HPU 2, ETBU 1
Howard Payne scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off single to upset ETBU. Collins took the loss recording 10 strikeouts and had a no hitter through four innings with the first hit coming in the fifth. ETBU finished with eight hits but left seven runners on base.
Ben Lea and
Jordan Hara both had two hits in the game.
Nick Massarini recorded the lone RBI in the top of the seventh innings to put ETBU up, 1-0, on a sacrifice fly. Two singles by HPU in the bottom of the seventh gave HPU the win.
Game 2
ETBU 6, HPU 4 (10 innings)
Two runs in the top of the 10
th inning was enough for ETBU as they held off HPU, 6-4, to take the series. Miller received the win going the final 2.2 innings not allowing any hits and recording four strikeouts.
Jagger Neely was the second pitcher in the game going 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts and three earned runs on four hits.
Hayden Robichaux started the game going four innings with three strikeouts giving up just one earned run and four hits.
Carson Wilson went 3-of-5 with one RBI to lead the team. Both
Jase Jones and Ben lead added two RBI. Jones recorded four RBI while Massarini added one RBI.
HPU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth but ETBU scored in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings for a 4-1 lead. HPU tied the game with three runs in the eighth inning to send the game to extra innings.
In the 10
th inning, Jones hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 6-4. Miller then retired the side in the bottom of the 10
th inning with a fly out and two strikeouts.
ETBU will host Mary Hardin-Baylor next weekend at Woods Field.
