BELTON, Texas – Scoring a program best 86.28 points in the final team event, East Texas Baptist University squeaked by Concordia University Wisconsin, 240.205 to 237.740. It is only the fourth time in program history to score 240 points in a meet as it is the second time this year. ETBU also had eight 9.0 scores or higher on the day.
Another season record continues to grow earning the third win in a season topping surpassing the two already won this year. ETBU had only recorded one win the program in the prior four seasons. The win is also the first post-season win for the program and a first-time win over a program that wasn't a first-year program. ETBU's previous three wins in the programs were over first-year programs.
Trailing CUW by 0.375 headed into the team event, ETBU posted a program best 86.280 to surpass CUW's 237.740. In the meet, ETBU only won two of the six events but the scores were so close coming into the final team event. ETBU took the Acro Event, 24.650 to 20.95, and then won the team event.
The first event was the Compulsory as ETBU scored 32.00 points but CUW had 32.600 winning the event by 0.600. ETBU started off with an 8.7 in the acro heat followed by two straight 9.0 scores. They had a 9.3 in the pyramid and 9.2 in the toss.
In the Acro Event, ETBU posted 24.650 points for the event win as CUW had 20.950 points. In the 5-Element heat,
Kennedy Brady,
Mary Kalafatis,
Rebecca Kalafatis, and
Ellie Davis scored a 9.45. The 7-Element then brought a 9.15 from
Brianna Brown, Jessica Kuhlman, M.Kalafatis, and
Kendal McAdoo.
The Pyramid Event was decided by 0.045 points as ETBU had 28.050 as CUW had 28.500. This event record three 9.0+ scores. In heat one, ETBU had a 9.20 and then a 9.00 in heat two. Heat three, made up of Brady, Brown, M.Kalafatis, R.Kalafatis,
Macie Goff,
Katie Melton,
Kaylee Morton, and
Jaiden Stroman, produced the best score of the day at 9.85.
ETBU had just under a two-point lead at the half, 84.70 to 82.05.
It was another close event in the Toss Event as ETBU fell by 0.30 points scoring 26.050 to CUW's 26.350. Their top heat came in heat three with an 8.85 by Brady, Melton, Davis, Zoey Conner, McAdoo, and
Jordyn Reeves. They also had an 8.50 in heat one and an 8.7 in heat two.
The Tumbling Heat was decided by a little over two points as ETBU posted 43.175 to CUW's 45.90. Goff had the top score at 9.225 in the aerial. The other top score in the event was an 8.2 in the duo of Goff and R.Kalafatis.
That set up the team event where ETBU was trailing by just 0.375 points. ETBU the won the meet taking the Team Event to advance onto the second round to face Trine University. They will face each other at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
