MARSHALL, Texas – An exciting second half ended in a draw as the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer program started the 2023 season with a 1-1 tie against the University of St. Thomas-Houston, ETBU is now 0-1-0 for the season and will face another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) member on Sunday.
Carly Wyatt led the team in shots with eight, as Kat Izaguirre,
Giselle Laredo, and
Caroline Wilemon all had two shots. Izaguirre and Wyatt led the team with shots on goal at two
. Addison Funk was in goal for 63 minutes recording one save as
Cadence Tischler had one goal against and one save. Overall, ETBU recorded 18 shots with nine on goal holding UST to just eight shots and three on goal.
The first half of the game was scoreless for both teams. ETBU fired nine shots with six of them being on goal. St. Thomas shot three times as one was on goal. UST stopped six shots while ETBU had one save in the half.
Just 14 minutes into the second half, ETBU's Wyatt, with an assist from
Olivia Gallegos, scored the first goal of the year for a 1-0 lead. The Tigers continued their assault firing a total of nine shots with three of them being on goal. Wyatt led the team in shots in this half with five. Almost 12 minutes later (71:51), UST found the net tying the match at one. They fired five shots overall in the half with two on goal. In the final 19 minutes, ETBU had three shots that were just above the goal as the defense held UST to just one shot.
ETBU will head to Seguin, Texas, to face off against Texas Lutheran University on September 3 at 1:00 P.M. in a regional match.
