KERRVILLE, Texas – A strong defensive effort led to East Texas Baptist University's first win of the year for men's soccer as they shut out Schreiner University, 2-0. ETBU is now 1-2-3 on the year.
ETBU's defense faced 14 Schreiner shots with five on goal as
Bryan Carrillo stopped five shots for the win. ETBU took 12 shots with four on goal and two goals.
Garrett Garvin,
Leonardo Esteban, and
Dylan Garcia all had two shots. Esteban recorded one goal as Garcia earned the other off of a defensive deflection.
The two goals came in a two-minute time span in the second half. At 63:00, Garcia served in a ball that deflected off the Schreiner defender for the 1-0 lead. Almost two minutes later, Esteban made it 2-0 on assists by Garcia and
Bruno Palmieri.
In the scoreless first half, Schreiner had six shots with two on goal. Carrillo stopped shots in the 14
th and 22
nd minutes to keep it scoreless. ETBU had four shots with two on goal. The final shot on goal in the period came in the 42
nd minute as Schreiner kept the score at 0-0 at the half.
Carrillo stopped a shot in the 56
th minute and seven minutes later, ETBU scored off the defensive deflection for the 1-0 lead.
Ty Carnes took a shot that was saved by Schreiner at 64:44 and it was 10 seconds later that Eseban nailed a shot for the 2-0 lead. Schreiner didn't have a shot on goal the rest of the half as ETBU pulled out the win, 2-0.
ETBU will host Centenary on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Cornish Field.
