BELTON, Texas – After a defensive, hard fought first half, East Texas Baptist University came up short in the second half against the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor, 2-0, in the women's soccer American Southwest Conference opener. This marks the first loss for the Tigers this season as they are now 3-1-3 and 0-1-0 in the ASC ending their six-match unbeaten streak.
Addison Funk totaled seven saves in goal as she saw 21 shots with nine on goal.
Makayla Baxter and
Carly Wyatt led the team in shots with two each. Wyatt took ETBU's only shot on goal as the team had seven overall.
The Tigers held off the Crusaders in the first half, which was no small feat as the Crusaders had a total of eight shots as three were on goal. ETBU had three shots in this half as one was on goal. The Crusaders made up for the accuracy of their shots in this half with quantity. ETBU's first shot came from
Katherine Vela at 18:12. Funk's first save of the game occurred at 24:05. The next two shots came from Wyatt within seconds of each other. First at 28:02 was a shot on goal that was saved by UMHB and second was a shot at 28:09. Funk leapt up and to the right for her second save at 35:30. Funk's third and final save of the half was at 38:07 as the half ended at a 0-0 tie.
In the second half, ETBU attempted four shots but faced 13 from the Crusaders. Funk recorded four saves with the first coming at 49:43. The next shots from ETBU came from Baxter at 52:50 and Elizabeth Wynn at 54:07. Not long after, Baxter had another shot at 56:06. Unfortunately, none of these shots found they're to the back of the net. UMHB's first goal occurred at 61:56. That did not deter Funk as she made her fifth save of the game at 71:56. UMHB scored their second goal at 73:22. Funk, still not giving up, made her sixth save of the game at 75:16 and her seventh at 82:40. The Tigers final shot of the game came from
Mallory Duncan at 88:17.
ETBU will travel to Austin, Texas, to face Concordia University Texas on September 30 at 1:00 P.M.
