IRVING, Texas – It was a hard fought second half for East Texas Baptist University as they battled back from a 1-0 deficit at the half for a 2-2 tie against the University of Dallas in men's soccer action. ETBU is now 0-1-1 on the year.
ETBU took 12 shots with seven on goal while Dallas had seven shots and four on goal.
Garrett Garvin led the team with three shots and two on goal while both
Dylan Garcia and
Luke Hansen came off the bench to score goals.
Anthony Lozada spent 90 minutes in goal collecting two saves but gave up two goals.
Dallas netted the 1-0 lead just 20 minutes into the match as they had three shots in the period. ETBU came out attacking to start the game as Garvin had two shots within the first five minutes with one of them saved.
Brenden Gajewski then had a shot saved in the 11
th minute as it looked like ETBU was pushing forward to score. Dallas countered with three shots in the next five minutes as two were on goal. The first goal of the match came with one of those shots in the 20
th minute for the 1-0 lead. ETBU didn't put up another shot until the 43
rd minute from
Royce McConnell as it was saved. ETBU trailed, 1-0, at the half.
Once again, ETBU came out on the attack with three shots in the first 12 minutes of the half.
Gabriel Alvarez and Tony Garcia both had looks in the 49
th and 50
th minutes but one was high and the other to the side. Garcia took ETBU's third shot on goal in the game in the 58
th minute but it was saved. Two more ETBU shots came in the 62
nd and 63
rd minutes before Hansen broke free to tie the game at one in the 67
th minute with assists from Tony Garcia
Five minutes later,
Dylan Garcia put ETBU in front in the 72
nd minute as
Edwin Jimenez and
Anthony Morales were credited with the assist for a 2-1 lead. Garvin almost made it 3-1 in the 73
rd minute but Dallas' goalie nabbed the shot to stay within one. After 12 minutes of keeping Dallas out of the box, the Crusaders scored in the 85
th minute to tie the game at two with only five minutes left in the match. Neither team had a shot in the last five minutes but Dallas did pressure only to see ETBU deny them a chance for the win as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
ETBU will host Millsaps College on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at Cornish Field.
