MARSHALL, Texas—A valiant second-half effort by East Texas Baptist University was just shy of upsetting the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 5-4. ETBU was down 5-0 at the half before scoring four goals in the second. They are now 8-8-1 and 3-4-1 in the ASC as the no. 3 seed for the post-season tournament.
ETBU took 18 shots, with 10 on goal as UMHB, 28 shots, and 13 on goal. UMHB was held to just nine shots in the second half after 19 in the first, as ETBU took 11 of their 18 shots in the second.
Brenden Gajewski led the team with seven shots, four on goal, and one goal.
Junior Lopez and Joel Garica both followed with four shots each. Lopez finished with two shots on goal and one goal, while Garcia had three shots on goal and two goals.
Ryan Lord started the game by giving up five goals and had seven saves.
Anthony Lozada finished recording one save in the second half.
UMHB scored two goals within three minutes of each other for the lead. Their first came in the 12
th minute and then followed in the 15
th minute, making it 2-0. The third goal was in the 26
th minute, and then the final two came in the 35
th and 39
th minutes for the 5-0 lead at the half.
ETBU pushed their offense hard in the second half, scoring three goals in 10 minutes. Garcia hit the first one on a penalty kick at 52:01, and then Lopez made it 5-2 in the 55
th minute. Garcia collected his second goal in the match for the third time this season in the 62
nd minute. Continuing to be aggressive, ETBU had three more shots with one on goal in the next 20 minutes. Gajewski had a look in the 84
th minute that barely missed going in. Two minutes later, he did score in the 85
th minute to pull within one, 5-4. In the final minute, Garcia had one last look to tie the match, but the UMHB goalie stopped it.
ETBU will now host Texas Dallas on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
