MS | Late Goal Gives ETBU Tie Against LETU

LONGVIEW, Texas – In a nail-biting finale at LeTourneau University, East Texas Baptist University tied the match at two with 36 seconds left against the YellowJackets to come away with the tie, 2-2. ETBU is now 6-4-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in the ASC.
 
The Tigers took a total of 10 shots with four on goal. They had six in the first half and four in the second half. Two Tigers had goals from Joel Garcia and Dylan Garcia. Joel Garcia led the team in shots with five. Dylan Garcia led the team in shots on goal, taking two. Anthony Lozada led the team in saves with six.
 
ETBU had a good start in the first half, with Dylan Garcia scoring off an assist from Junior Lopez (3:11) in the fourth minute for an early 1-0 lead. Not long after, Lozada displayed his abilities in goal, making two saves in back-to-back fashion at 9:09 and 9:36. LeTourneau closed the gap, scoring a goal at 17:04 to tie the game at one. ETBU continued their attack with a shot on goal from Dylan Garcia saved in the 19th minute (18:44). The YellowJackets kept the attack with a shot that failed to find the back of the net (19:51). For almost nine minutes, the back and forth battle for positioning continued with several throw-ins and fouls. The next offensive actions did not occur until 28:44 when Joel Garcia took a shot that missed to the right of the goal. Brenden Gajewski took a shot that missed high. To the right (31:44). The Tigers team defense blocked a shot at 35:17. Lozada made the third save of the match at 36:14. The remaining time in the first half was a constant battle for field position, with neither team able to get a place where they were able to attempt to score.
 
LETU started the second half with a shot that sailed over the goal (50:05). Not long after, another LETU shot was taken but saved by Lozada (52:39). A third shot was taken only to be blocked by the Tigers as a team (53:44). The Tigers were able to take some offensive action as Joel Garcia had a shot that was blocked (55:21). Around a minute later, LETU took a shot but was blocked by ETBU (56:40). A freekick for ETBU put the ball in place for a shot by Matthew Aguilar which was saved by LETU (66:14). Lozada then made two saves (68:02 & 70:30) to keep ETBU in the game. Challa Omandi took a shot that went high over the net at 73:29. Tiger team defense was on display again with three shots that were blocked (74:13, 75:09, 76:15). The stalemate was eventually broken by LETU making a goal at 85:53 for a 2-1 lead. With only four minutes left to go, ETBU did not lower the tempo as Joel Garcia made the final goal of the match with only 36 seconds left on the clock, tying the game at two (89:24). The match ended with a 2-2 tie.
 
ETBU will compete again on Thursday, October 10, in Richardson, Texas, against the University of Texas-Dallas Comets.
