LONGVIEW, Texas—After a scoreless first half, East Texas Baptist University's second-half play resulted in four goals for a 4-2 victory over Letourneau University. With the win, ETBU is now 4-4-1 on the year and 2-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
ETBU took a total of 16 shots, four of which were on goal, as two were in the first half. They followed with 14 shots in the second half. Four Tigers scored goals:
Makayla Baxter, Gisselle Laredo,
Jordyn Vitale, and
Sarah Ramos.
Michelle Medellin led the team in shots with three. Ramos, Baxter, Laredo, and Vitale led the team in shots on goal, each having taken one.
Cadence Tischler finished with three saves.
ETBU took the first offensive action of the match in the first half with a shot high from Baxter (4:01). A battle for field position occurred between 4:30 and 12:33 with multiple throw-ins, fouls, and corner kicks. The Tigers regained possession off a YellowJacket freekick (12:33) and moved the ball down the pitch for Ramos to take a shot (13:23) that the LETU blocked. The Tiger's defensive play was on point in the first half, blocking a shot at 18:49. Not long after, LETU took another shot as Tischler had the save (20:23). The position play continued with the YellowJackets taking a shot (26:51) that missed right of the goal. The Tigers team defense would emerge again, blocking two back-to-back shots at 29:46 and 29:52. The back-and-forth play continued till the end of the first half, ending a 0-0.
The second half started great for ETBU as Baxter had the first goal at 47:23 on an assist from Ramos, 1-0. The Tigers kept up the pressure with a shot coming from
Analissa Gutierrez, which sailed over the top of the goal (48:56). The pressure paid off, with Laredo scoring the second goal of the game at 50:09 for a 2-0 lead. ETBU's relentless attack continued with shots being taken by
Kenadie Avants (58:45),
Mallory Duncan (59:21), and another by Avants missing up and to the right (60:40).
ETBU found the back of the net again as Vitale scored with an assist from Duncan (62:50) to push the lead to 3-0. However, the YellowJackets found the back of the net at 68:38, pulling within two, 3-1. LETU kept up their attack with another goal on an own goal at 69:41. With a one-goal lead, 3-2, ETBU was unfazed with a shot from
Grace Shurley going over the top of the net (74:59) and a shot from Medellin striking the top bar of the goal (82:18). Ramos would score the final goal of the game at 83:35 to put the lead back at two for some breathing room, 4-2. The final act by the Tigers saw the defense blocking the YellowJackets final shot in the 89th minute (88:14).
ETBU will compete again on Thursday, October 10, in Richardson, Texas, against the University of Texas-Dallas Comets.
