MARSHALL, Texas –
Sarah Ramos secured the game-winning goal in the 88th minute as East Texas Baptist University came from behind for a 2-1 victory over LeTourneau University, advancing in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament at the Marshall High School football field. It is the first ASC Tournament win for ETBU since 2005 when they defeated LETU 3-2. ETBU has produced two ties in the ASC Tournament, advancing once on penalty kicks.
ETBU is now 6-10-1 and faces no. 1 seed Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. This is the third meeting of the two teams this season and the final time they will play each other in the ASC as LETU moves to the SCAC next year. ETBU won all three meetings this year and is 5-0-2 in the last seven matches vs. LETU.
ETBU took 17 shots, five of which were on goal, but LETU had six shots on goal with just 12 shots. Ramos took seven shots with three on goal, scoring two.
Makayla Baxter added three shots, with one on goal, and
Keira Coughlin and
Mallory Duncan each had two shots.
Cadence Tischler finished five saves and one goal against.
Going back and forth for the first 30 minutes, LETU broke the tie with a goal in the 33rd minute on a breakaway. ETBU had three shots on goal in the half, but all were before LETU's goal in the fourth, 18th, and 19th minutes. LETU allowed just one ETBU shot in the final 12 minutes, taking a 1-0 lead at the half.
Coughlin had a shot in the 50th minute, and Baxter missed in the 53rd minute. Ramos missed in the 59th minute and then scored in the 62nd minute on a rebound from her shot to tie the match at one. LETU's shot in the 68th minute was saved by Tischler, along with another great save in the 70th minute, keeping it at 1-1. Tischler once again stopped a LETU attack in the 81st minute as overtime was starting to look like an option, as both teams had a strong defense. Then, in the 88th minute, Ramos broke the tie with a shot to the top left net for the 2-1 lead. ETBU kept LETU from the goal in the final two minutes, stealing the victory away from the YellowJackets, 2-1.
ETBU has now advanced to the ASC Tournament semi-final match for the second time in four years. They made the semi-finals in the 2020-21 Spring season after advancing in a 4-3 penalty kick win over Sul Ross State after a 0-0 tie.
