LONGVIEW, Texas – It was a heartbreaking loss for East Texas Baptist University on the road to LeTourneau University as the YellowJackets swooshed a shot with 2.8 seconds left for the win, 65-63. ETBU is now 11-10 and 7-6 in the American Southwest Conference as their three-game win streak ends.
Darry Moore earned his third double-double in five games and eighth overall on the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Ryan Elzy added 13 points as
Kurt Labeaud had seven points and eight rebounds.
Jaden Conner gave eight points and nine rebounds. LETU's Deonte Jackson had 17 points.
The difference in the game came at the three-point line as ETBU went 0-for-11 and LETU made four (40 percent). ETBU shot 36 percent overall and 81 percent from the line. LETU made 50 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the foul line. ETBU out rebounded LETU, 43-27, and forced 19 turnovers scoring 46 points in the paint.
After being down 12 points, 60-48, with just under six minutes to go in the game, ETBU came back to tie the game at 63 with 1:17 to go on a 15-3 run. Elzy hit two free throws to tie the game. After LETU missed a shot with 48 seconds left, ETBU had a chance to take the lead but the layup was blocked at 27 seconds on the clock as the YellowJackets received the team defensive rebound. LETU then ran down the clock and hit the game winner from the right corner with 2.8 seconds left to go up, 65-63. ETBU's last ditch effort to go full court was stolen at mid-court to seal the ASC win.
ETBU started the second half pushing their lead to three, 39-36, but 10 minutes later LETU had a nine-point lead, 50-41, on a 14-2 run. Elzy cut the lead to four, 52-48, at 8:25, on a fast break layup but LETU had the lead back to 12, 60-48, before ETBU's final run to tie the game.
The first half went back-and-forth as ETBU held a one-point halftime lead, 35-34. ETBU had a three-point lead, 10-7, at 14:50 but by 13:22 LETU was up, 14-10, on a 7-0 run.
Michael Roberts tied the game at 25 at 8:25 on two free throws and in the final eight minutes there were six lead changes.
Jayden Williams put ETBU up by three, 35-32, on two free throws at 1:24 and then LETU hit a jumper with 30 seconds to go bringing the halftime score to 35-34.
ETBU will travel to Brownwood, Texas, on February 8 to face Howard Payne University at 7:30 p.m.
