MARSHALL, Texas – It was an exciting double header for East Texas Baptist University as they swept Sul Ross State University, 18-0, and 10-2. ETBU is now 5-3 and had 20 hits in the game.
Sayers Collins moved to 2-0 recording six strikeouts in game one and
Jagger Neely moved to 2-1 with six strikeouts. Five pitchers were used to allow just five hits.
Brett Wagner went 5-of-8 with eight RBI, a double, and a home run with nine total bases.
Hunter Rumachik added three hits with two RBI and a triple. Four players also recorded two hits.
Nicolas Chavez hit a grand slam for four RBI as
Austin Barry,
Connor Massimini, and
Carson Wilson had three RBI. Barry also had a home run.
In game one, Collins pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts giving up two hits. He has now pitched 12 scoreless innings this season.
Landry Powell pitched the final two innings recording three strikeouts.
Wagner went 3-of-4 with five RBI with a home run and four runs scored. Massimini and Rumachik both added two hits.
Carson Wilson and Massimini had three RBI while Barry, Rumachik, and
Landon Durdin added two RBI.
Dylan Burnaman recorded one RBI.
ETBU scored 10 runs in the first inning scoring in four of the six innings at-bat. They posted 13 hits with four extra base hits and stolen bases. Collins retired the side in the first, third, and fourth innings.
After three scoreless innings in game two, ETBU scored first in the bottom of the fourth. SRSU tied the game in the top of the fifth but a Chavez grand slam blew the game open for a 5-1 lead. ETBU then scored four runs in the sixth for a 9-1 lead and one in the eighth making it 10-1. SRSU added one more run in the ninth.
Neely went six innings giving up six hits with six strikeouts and one earned run.
Tate Sloan pitched two innings with three strikeouts and
Ethan Brister went in the ninth. Wagner and Chavez both had two hits. Chavez finished with four RBI as Wagner added three and Barry one.
ETBU will finish the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for Alumni Day.
