AUSTIN, Texas – Opening up American Southwest Conference play at 3-0, #8 East Texas Baptist University held off Concordia University Texas, 6-4, in game three of the series. ETBU has now won six games in a row and are 9-3 and 3-0 in the ASC.
Jacob Sherman started the game going four innings with three strikeouts giving up no earned runs and one hit.
Peyton Miller then finished the final five innings for the win allowing five hits and three earned runs.
Jacob Evangelista and
Austin Barry both had two hits in the game. Barry and
Hunter Rumachik recorded two RBI as
Brett Wagner and
Justin Blancaflor had one RBI. Blancaflor hit his first collegiate home run for his RBI.
CTX opened with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but ETBU answered back in the third inning with two runs. After a ground out to start the third, Blancaflor homered deep to left field to tie the game at one. Four batters later, with two runners on, Wagner singled in Evangelista to take the 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, ETBU added three more runs to take control of the game. With two outs, Rumachik doubled in
Connor Massimini and
Nicolas Chavez for the 4-1 lead. Barry followed with a single through the left side as Rumachik trotted in from second base making it 5-1. CTX did add one run in the bottom of the inning cutting the lead to three, 5-2.
Barry, with two outs, singled in Rumachik from second base for the four-run lead, 6-2, in the top of the eighth inning. CTX threatened in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs with one out but Miller had the last two batters fly out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the first two CTX batters flied and grounded out before a double was given up. Miller then ended the game as the next batter grounded out as ETBU won, 6-4.
ETBU will host #21 University of La Verne in a three-game series next weekend in Marshall.
