MARSHALL, Texas – In a mid-week game against regional opponent Hendrix College (16-8), #7 East Texas Baptist University held off the Warriors, 7-5. ETBU is now 18-6 on the year.
ETBU used five pitchers in the game as
Tate Sloan earned his first collegiate win going one inning with one strikeout.
Robert Croft came for the final two innings for his fifth save of the year recording three strikeouts. On the day, ETBU had 10 strikeouts as starter
Jacob Sherman had three, Hayden Robicaux one, and
Brayden Hodges two strikeouts.
With 17 hits, seven players had two or more hits.
Dylan Burnaman led the way going 4-of-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Nicolas Chavez add three hits, and
Jacob Evangelista,
Connor Massimini,
Brett Wagner,
Cameron French, and
Colby Harris had two hits. Massimini led the team with three RBI as Burnaman recorded two RBI, and Wagner had one.
HC took an early 1-0 lead with a home run in the first inning. ETBU answered in the bottom of the inning when a run came in on a Wagner infield fly that was lost in the sun as Massimini scored. HC responded with two runs in the second but ETBU also matched their score. Burnaman singled in Harris to cut the lead to one, 3-2, and then Massimini tied the game on a single to center field as Evangelista scored.
ETBU scored two in the fourth to take the two-run lead, 5-3. Burnaman doubled down the left field line as Evangelista came in again to break the tie. Massimini then sacrificed his at-bat with a fly ball to centerfield as Burnaman scored again in the game.
Two runs by HC in the sixth tied the game at five. Chavez, though, became the difference in the bottom of the sixth when he scored on a passed ball to make it 6-5. The seventh inning brought a triple down the right field line by Massimini bringing in Burnamane to make it 7-5.
Croft pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit and three strikeouts to ice HC.
ETBU will host McMurry University in an ASC series on Thursday and Friday.
