MARSHALL, Texas – Finishing off the American Southwest Conference series by sweeping the double header, no. 7/11 East Texas Baptist University scored 22 runs with 19 hits in 15-5 and 7-5 wins over McMurry University. ETBU is now 21-6 and 11-1 in the ASC.
Four different players had three hits in
Brett Wagner, Michael Gallegos,
Hunter Rumachik, and
Dylan Burnaman. Rumachik led the way with seven RBI as
Austin Barry had four and Burnaman three. Wagner,
Nick Massarini, and
Jacob Evangelista all had one RBI. Michael Gallegos hit his first home run of the year as Burnaman and Evangelista both added one, too.
Sayers Collins and
Peyton Miller received the wins as the pitching staff combined for 20 strikeouts on the day.
Landry Powell recorded six, Collins five,
Hayden Robichaux three,
Tate Sloan and Miller two, each, and
Robert Croft and
Jackson Jones with one. Croft also received the save in game two.
Game 1
ETBU 15, McM 5
Scoring in five of the six innings they had at-bats, ETBU poured out 15 runs on 12 hits. Burnaman went 3-of-5 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the team. Rumachik and Austin both added two hits. Evangelista and Burnaman both collected home runs. Rumachik and Barry led the team with four RBI as Burnaman had three and Evangelista, Wagner, and Massarini all had one RBI.
Collins started the game going five innigns for the win moving to 6-1 on the year. He recorded five strikeouts with three hits and one earned run. Robichaux went one inning with three strikeouts, two hits and two earned runs and
Jackson Jones finished the seventh with one strikeout, three hits, and two earned runs.
ETBU scored four in the first inning as both Rumachik and Barry had back-to-back singles that brought in two runs each. Two home runs in the second from Evangelista and Burnaman made it 6-0. ETBU added a run in the third and the fourth for an 8-1 lead. McM scored two in the top of the sixth to pull within five, 8-3, but ETBU's offense collected seven runs in the bottom of the inning for an 15-3 lead. In that inning Rumachik and Barry both had two RBI hits, again, as Massarini earned a RBI, too. Burnaman ended the scoring with a double for two RBI. McM scored two in the top of the seventh to make it 15-5.
Game 2
ETBU 7, McM 5
ETBU had the game under control until McM scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull within two, 7-5. Croft came in for his sixth save of the year shutting down the Warhawks the final two innings as ETBU won their 21
st game of the year.
Wagner and Gallegos both had two hits. Rumachik led the team with three RBI as Gallegos had two RBI. Miller earned the win in relief going 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Powell started the game and went 4.1 innings for the no decision with six strikeouts giving up just one hit. He didn't give up any hits in four innings and the first batter of the fifth broke the no-hitter. Sloan went one inning and gave up four runs on three hits before Croft finished the final two innings.
Four runs in the third inning put ETBU in control early. After ETBU scored on a passed ball, Rumachik earned two RBI on a double and Gallegos made it 4-0 on a single to left center. In the fifth inning Rumachik had a sac fly as ETBU went up 5-0 and then Gallegos hit a solo home run making it 6-0. McM added their first run in the sixth but Massimini came home on a throwing error to second on a steal for the 7-1 lead. Four runs in the seventh put McM within striking distance at 7-5.
Croft retired the next six batters starting the eighth and ninth to preserve the win.
ETBU will travel to LeTourneau University next weekend for a three-game ASC series.
