BROWNWOOD, Texas – Earning their second straight shutout and five-inning game, #4 East Texas Baptist University swept the series over Howard Payne University, 8-0. ETBU is now 11-1 on the year and 3-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
ETBU scored in four of the five innings with nine hits for eight runs for their 11
th win.
Tristen Maddox and
Izabella Morales each had two hits. Three of ETBU's hits were for extra bases as Morales and Shelby Navarret had doubles and Maddox hit another home run in the series. Maddox,
Haylie Stum, Morales, Navarrete, and
Braidee Glenn all had one RBI.
Hannah Benavides went five innings allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts moving to 4-0 on the year. In the bottom of the fifth inning, she struck out the side to end the game.
After a scoreless first inning, ETBU added two in the top of the second inning. Navarrete doubled in
Emma Bell for the first run. The second run came in on a fielding error as Navarrete came home. Maddox started the scoring in the three-run third inning with a home run down the left field line.
Courtney White became the fourth run touching home on a wild pitch. Morales finished off the scoring with a double to left field as Bell was the fifth run.
Stum brought in the sixth run with a groundout in the fourth inning and then Glenn singled in Morales in the fifth inning for the 7-0 lead. The final run was
Natalie Norwood scoring on an error making it 8-0.
Benavides then finished off the YellowJackets in the bottom of the inning striking out the side.
ETBU will host Concordia Texas next Friday and Saturday at Bell Park at Taylor Field in ASC play.
