MARSHALL, Texas – Coming from behind by scoring four runs in the fourth inning, no. 4/5 East Texas Baptist University won their seventh American Southwest Conference series of the year, 6-3, over the University of Texas Dallas. In six of the seven ASC series wins, ETBU has taken all three games and are now 20-1 in the ASC and 31-6 overall.
The Sunday game also was Senior Day as ETBU recognized 10 seniors. Over the past four years, ETBU won 134 games going 87-18 in the ASC, won three ASC regular season championships, the program's first-ever ASC Tournament Championship, NCAA Regional and Super Regional Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament Championship.
Four pitchers were used in the Sunday contest as
Peyton Miller earned the win in relief. He pitched five innings to move to 5-1 on the year allowing just one hit, no runs, and recorded four strikeouts.
Landry Powell started the game going the first two innings giving up two earned runs with two strikeouts.
Jacob Sherman worked eighth inning and
Robert Croft gained his eighth save of the year with one strikeout and one hit in the ninth inning.
ETBU had seven hits in the game as seven players all had one hit.
Jacob Evangelista and
Nicolas Chavez both had doubles.
Connor Massimini had two RBI on a walk and sacrifice fly as
Nick Massarini also added two RBI.
Dylan Burnaman recorded one RBI.
UTD took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but ETBU answered in the bottom on a Burnaman single that scored Evangelista. The Comets made it at 2-1 game in the second inning and held on to the lead through the top of the fourth. Miller entered the game in the third inning and retired the side in the fourth and had a double-play in the fifth facing just three batters shutting down UTD's offense.
It took ETBU just three more innings to get their bats going for a four-run fourth inning. Massimini singled up the middle for two RBI as
Landon Durdin and
Hunter Rumachik came in to take the lead, 3-2. Six batters later, Massarini was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to give ETBU a two-run lead, 4-2. Later in the inning, he came home on a wild pitch making it 5-2.
In the sixth inning, Massarini flew out to right field as Burnaman came in for the final run and a four-run lead, 6-2. UTD threatened in the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles and one out to cut the lead to three. With one out, Sherman got the next batter to fly out and then a ground out ended the inning. In the ninth inning, UTD had two runners on and two outs with the tying run at the plate but a ground out gave ETBU the three-run win, 6-3.
ETBU will travel to Arkansas for their final regular season ASC series next weekend before hosting the ASC Championship Tournament.
