RICHARDSON, Texas – Avenging a regular season loss to Hardin-Simmons University, East Texas Baptist University earned an American Southwest Conference Women's Tennis Tournament first-round win over the Cowgirls, 5-2. ETBU is now 14-4 on the year and advances to the semi-final round to face Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Starting off with a 2-1 lead in doubles, ETBU had the momentum heading into singles play.
Monique Ybarra and
Addy Seward won the no. 1 match over Laurel Coleman and Jonnah Smith, 8-6. Jayde Childress and
Bailey Smith then won the no. 2 match, 8-4, over Brenna Gordon and Addyson Tylaska. At no. 3,
Kristyn Dunn and
Isabelle Duarte fell, 8-6, to Halle Smith and Christa Bennett.
ETBU went up 3-1 after Ybarra won the no. 1 singles match, 6-1, 7-5, over Coleman. HSU then earned a team point winning at no. 4 singles, 6-0, 7-5. ETBU clinched the match with two wins at no. 5 and no. 6 singles. Childress won the no. 5 match, 6-3, 6-2, over Tylaska and then Dunn took the no. 6 match, 7-5, 7-5, as ETBU advanced on.
ETBU will play the ASC West no. 1 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Las Colinas Country Club in Irving most likely at 5:00 p.m. due to weather.
