LONGVIEW, Texas – Playing their second American Southwest Conference series this week, no. 4 East Texas Baptist University split the double header with LeTourneau University on Friday night. ETBU won game one, 4-3, but fell in game two, 3-2. ETBU is now 23-2 and 13-1 in the ASC.
Both
Tristen Maddox and
Courtney White had four hits for the two games as
Delanie Loya recorded two RBI.
Hannah Benavides earned the win in game one.
Game 1
ETBU 4, LETU 3
ETBU held off a late inning push from LETU to try and take the lead for the one-run win. LETU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to one, 4-3, but Benavides shut down the YellowJackets, 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Benavides moved to 10-0 on the year and had five strikeouts in the game.
Maddox, White,
Tauryn Cummings, and
Madalyn Melton all had two hits. Loya added two RBI and Cummings and
Makayla Menchue added one RBI.
In the first inning, Cummings singled in Maddox for the 1-0 lead. Menchue made it 2-0 in the fourth with a single through the left side as Melton came in. LETU cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning but a two-run Loya homer in the sixth inning making it 4-1. LETU answered with their own two-run home run to come within one before Benavides didn't allow any thing to happen in the bottom of the seventh.
Game 2
LETU 3, ETBU 2
After ETBU tied the game in the top of the seventh on a passed ball, LETU had a two-out, walk-off single for the win over the Tigers. ETBU had nine hits in the game but left eight runners on base.
Maddox and White both had two hits in the game as Melton had he lone RBI. Melton took the loss going 6.2 innings with three strikeouts.
ETBU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Melton double to left field that scored
Haylie Stum. LETU took the lead, 2-1, on an ETBU error in the bottom of the fourth inning and then held the Tigers scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning. ETBU had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out but didn't get the break needed to retake the lead.
Maddox scored in the top of the seventh on a passed ball to tie the game at two. LETU then won the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single to right center field.
The two teams will finish the series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. with one game.
