MARSHALL, Texas – Scoring in every inning, no. 2 East Texas Baptist University run-ruled Simmons University, 10-0, in the first game of the NCAA Division III Marshall, Texas Regional Tournament. ETBU scored four runs in the first inning to propel them to the 10-run win. They are now 39-2 on the year.
ETBU had just five hits in four innings as
Tristen Maddox and
Emma Bell combined for four of the five hits. Maddox recorded one RBI and Bell hit her second home run of the year for two RBI.
Delanie Loya also had two RBI and
Courtney White had one RBI.
Hannah Benavides pitched five innings moving to 16-0 recording her seventh shutout of the year. She allowed just two hits while recording two strikeouts.
Simmons first batter of the game recorded a hit but Benavides then retired the next six batters. The Sharks second hit of the game came in the third inning as the next nine batters were retired.
With one out in the first inning, a Simmons wild pitch allowed both White and Maddox to score for a 2-0 lead. After Stum walked, Bell hit a shot to right field for the four-run lead. An error in the second inning allowed
Mary Frances Ellis to come in as ETBU went up, 5-0.
Hannah Kelley was the sixth run of the game as she stole third and then came home on an errant throw down the left field line making it 6-0. Three batters later, and two walks, Maddox singled in
Ava Rodriguez for the seventh run. White followed with a fielder's choice at-bat as
Mallory Pyle scored to put ETBU up by eight.
Loya finished out the scoring with a two RBI fielder's choice in the fourth inning as Isabelle Morales and
Ava Nieto were the final two runs.
ETBU will now wait to see who they play on Friday in the winner's bracket with times pending due to inclement weather in game two on Thursday night.
