MARSHALL, Texas – Slow and steady was the key for no. 4 East Texas Baptist University in their opening game of the NCAA Division III Marshall, Texas Regional as they held off Centenary College (La.), 5-2. ETBU scored one run in five different innings and used just two pitchers moving to 37-8 on the year and moving onto the semi-finals of the winner's bracket.
Hunter Rumachik and
Dylan Burnaman each had two hits of the six for the team. Rumachik posted two RBI and had a home run while
Connor Massimini had one RBI on a solo home run. Burnaman also added a RBI.
Jagger Neely went six innings for his 10
th win of the year striking out three batters and allowing just one earned run.
Peyton Miller pitched the final three innings for his second save of the year giving up no runs or hits with one strikeout. Neely retired the side to start the game and Miller finished the game retiring eight straight batters. Neely and Miller allowed just two runs as Centenary had scored a combined 34 runs in the last five games averaging almost seven runs per game.
Rumachik started off the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning for a quick 1-0 lead. Centenary then scored one run in the third and fourth innings to go up, 2-1. Massimini tied the game in the fourth inning with his sixth home run of the year on a solo shot to left field. In the fifth inning, Rumachik came home on a passed ball to put ETBU up, 3-2. Rumachik was then walked in the sixth inning with the bases loaded to earn a RBI and give ETBU a two run lead, 4-2. Burnaman finished off the scoring in the seventh inning singling to right field as
Carson Wilson came in making it 5-2.
ETBU will now face no. 4 seed Concordia University Texas in the winner's bracket on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
