MARSHALL, Texas – In the season opener at Cornish Field, East Texas Baptist University played a tough University of California Santa Cruz program, coming up short, 3-0. ETBU is now 0-1 on the year.
UCSC's offense overpowered the young ETBU team, taking 25 shots to ETBU's five. The Banana Slugs posted five shots on goal, scoring three, while ETBU had two shots on goal.
Makayla Baxter and
Grace Shurley recorded the shots on goal. Shurley led the team with three shots, while Baxter and
Sarah Ramos each had one shot.
Cadence Tischler made two saves in goal.
UCSC scored quickly two minutes into the game and then made it 2-0 in the 28
th minute. Their final goal came early in the second half (49
th minute) for the 3-0 lead.
Shurley took ETBU's first shot on goal in the ninth minute to the bottom left of the net as UCSC's Mia Linville saved it. The second ETBU shot on goal came in the 32
nd minute by Baxter.
ETBU will host Centenary College (La.) on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
