SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Pressing no. 8 Trinity University to its limits, East Texas Baptist University went five sets with the Tigers, falling 3-2 (15-25, 17-25, 29-27, 25-22, 8-15). TU went up 2-0 before ETBU ground out two straight-set wins, forcing the fifth set where they fell 15-8. ETBU is now 1-1 on the year.

Overcoming a tough first two sets, ETBU finished hitting .118 with 56 kills, while Trinity had 64 kills on a .299 hitting percentage. ETBU recorded 10 service aces and eight blocks with 76 digs. Set three was the best for ETBU as they hit .341 with 19 kills. In the final three sets, ETBU had 39 kills, hitting just over .200.

Avery Reid and Graycee Mosley combined for 39 of the team's 56 kills. For the eighth time in her career, Reid posted 20 or more kills with 20 adding five digs. Mosley recorded her 37th career double-double with 19 kills and 21 digs. Lexi Moody had 36 assists, Callie Humphrey recorded 22 digs, and Anita Hancock posted four blocks.

Trinity took the first two sets, opening up early in each set. In set one, they had a 4-0 lead, moving it to a 17-5 advantage and taking the set, 25-15. Trinity started set two with a 3-0 lead, going up 9-1 with a 25-17 final for a 2-0 lead.

Set three changed momentum to ETBU's side with a 29-27 win. It was ETBU's best set for kills, with 19. Trinity ran out to a 4-0 lead, trying to wear ETBU down. They kept their four-point lead, 10-6, but had a service error, and kills by Hancock and Moody pulled ETBU within one, 10-9. Two kills from Mosley tied the set at 12, and the two teams swapped the lead each serve until ETBU scored two straight. Hannah Perry put it at 18-17 with a kill. After a tie at 18, Reid had a kill and service ace for the 20-18 lead. ETBU never gave up the lead after that. A Mosley kill gave ETBU a 22-19 lead, but TU tied it at 22. Another Mosley kill and a Moody and Grace Williamson block put the score at 24-22. TU scored the next two, tying it at 24. Exchanging the next three points for a 27-27 tie, Reid put ETBU back up with a kill, and Mosley finished the set on a kill, 29-27, for the first win.

In set four, Trinity jumped out in front, 3-0, and made it 8-4 on a kill. ETBU answered with four straight points on two straight service aces from Mosley, a Reid kill, and a Trinity service error to tie it at eight. Trinity went on a run and took a 17-12 lead before going up 19-13, and an ETBU attack error made it 21-14. ETBU scored the next five points with three Reid kills and a service ace from Sadie Kasowski to come within two, 21-19. Trinity scored the next point, 22-19, only to see six straight points by ETBU, forcing a fifth set, 25-22. Reid posted four kills in the 6-0 run with a Moody service ace and a Hancock and Perry block.

Trinity took an early lead for the fifth straight set, going up 5-0. Down 7-2, ETBU scored three straight with a kill by Reid and McKenzie Mansell's service ace to make it 7-5. That is as close as ETBU would come in the 15-point set. Reid pulled ETBU to within three, 11-8, on a kill, but Trinity scored the following four points to end the match, 15-11.

ETBU will face Texas Lutheran at 4:00 p.m. later today.
