JACKSON, Miss. – Pulling off another winning goal in the match's final minutes, East Texas Baptist University scored in the 89
th minute for a 2-1 victory over Millsaps College.
Dylan Garcia netted the winning goal in the 89
th minute as ETBU moved to 3-0-0. It is the second time in three matches that ETBU has posted a winning goal in the final three minutes of the match.
The 3-0-0 start is the best three-match start in the NCAA era, as the 2005 team went 2-0-1. In transition to the NCAA, the 1998 team went 21-0-2, while the 2000 team started 4-0-0. In head coach
Chris Crawford's first season, in 2016, his team went 4-1 in the first five matches with a 2-1 start.
Joel Garcia led the team with a goal and assist for three points, taking five shots, one on goal.
Regan Trojacek and
Leonardo Esteban added three shots each. Esteban collected two shots on goal to lead the team.
Ryan Lord stayed perfect on the year, moving to 3-0-0, collecting five saves and giving up one goal.
ETBU took 16 shots, five of which were on goal, and 11 of these came in the second half. Millsaps took 13 shots, six of which were on goal, but it only had five shots in the second half, with three on goal.
In the first five minutes of the match, Millsaps had two shots that missed the goal, going top right and over the left side of the net.
Joel Garcia put ETBU up, 1-0, in the 21
st minute with an unassisted goal. It was his second shot of the match as he put the ball above the goal in the 16
th minute. Lord had two saves in the first half, and the first came in the 17
th minute after Garcia's shot. Ten minutes after ETBU took a 1-0 lead, Millsaps knotted the score at one. In the 32
nd minute, Millsaps almost took the lead, but Lord stopped a shot to the bottom center of the goal to keep the match tied. Millsaps had two more shots in the final eight minutes, but the Tigers held firm for a 1-1 tie at the half.
Esteban acted quickly in the second half with two shots on goal in two minutes but couldn't find the back of the net. ETBU's offense came alive with seven shots in 30 minutes, as Millsaps had only one shot. Lord grabbed two saves in the 84
th and 86
th minutes, preserving the tie. In between those two Millsaps shots,
Joseph Flores connected on a shot stopped in the 85
th minute. Almost three minutes after Lord had his fifth game save,
Dylan Garcia pressured into the box for the game-winning goal at 88:03 on an assist from
Joel Garcia. With under two minutes left, ETBU's defense held off Millsaps for the 2-1 win.
ETBU travels to Belhaven University on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match vs. the Blazers.
