MBB | Three-Point Shooting Becomes Difference for ETBU Loss to ULV

MARSHALL, Texas – Coming down to three-pointers made, the University of La Verne connected on seven three-point shots, holding off a late East Texas Baptist University run, 75-71, as the Tigers connected on just one three-pointer in the game (16 percent). ETBU is now 4-11 on the year.
 
Colin Roberts posted a career-high 19 points, going 8-for-11 from the floor with six rebounds. Jason Justice added 16 points, and Joshua R Davis scored 12 points. Michael Roberts finished with nine points and nine rebounds. ETBU shot 45 percent but took just six three-point shots, making one. They made 71 percent of their free throws (20-of-28), too. ULV made 44 percent of their shots, went 7-of-18 from the arc (38 percent), and was 14-of-25 from the line (56 percent). ETBU outrebounded ULV, 37-36.
 
There were 13 lead changes in the game, with 12 ties with eight ties in the first half. JT Curry tied the game at 17 at 11:39, and Justice put ETBU up, 19-17, on two free throws at 10:45. By 8:27, ULV had a four-point lead, 25-21, on an 8-2 run. Nathan Fleming gave ETBU a one-point advantage at 5:36 on a jumper, 28-27, as ETBU responded with a 7-2 run. With 2:38 left, Fleming put ETBU up by four, 35-31, with a layup. That was the last bucket made by ETBU in the final 2:30 as ULV took a 38-35 halftime lead on a 7-0 run.
 
Eight minutes into the second half, ULV improved their lead to 10, 54-44. At the 10:32 mark, they had an 11-point lead, 58-47, on two free throws. In the next four minutes, ETBU went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 60. Justice had seven of the 13 points as Davis added five with an and-1 fast break. Michael Roberts tied the game with two free throws at 6:18. ULV moved their lead back to three, but ETBU tied the game at 65 on a Colin Roberts and-1 and at 67 on a Justice shot (2:34). In just over two minutes, ULV out scored ETBU, 8-2, for a six-point lead, 75-69, with 17 seconds left to play. Roberts pulled ETBU within two, 71-69, with 1:08 left, but ULV hit a three-pointer with 39 seconds to go for a five-point advantage, 74-60. Davis had the final shot with eight seconds left to make it 75-71.
 
ETBU will host Texas Dallas on Saturday, January 11, at 3:00 p.m.
