MBB | Cold Shooting for ETBU Leads to Loss in Ornelas

MARSHALL, Texas—East Texas Baptist University's cold shooting night in Ornelas Gym led to an 82-57 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. ETBU is now 6-18 and 2-5 in the ASC.
 
ETBU shot 30 percent but only made 10 percent (2-of-19) from the three-point line, going 0-for-10 in the second half. After shooting 40 percent in the first half, ETBU was 8-of-35 in the second half for 22 percent. They made 65 percent of their free throws. UMHB, though, shot 45 percent, making 50 percent in the first half. They finished shooting 25 percent from the arc and 60 percent from the stripe. They also outrebounded ETBU 47-42, forcing 15 turnovers for 22 points. UMHB also added 44 points in the paint.
 
Jason Justice was the only player in double figures with a career-high 34 points. Michael Roberts added 10 rebounds to lead the team.
 
ETBU took a quick 7-2 lead in the game's first three minutes. Joshua R. Davis opened the scoring with a three-pointer to take a 3-2 lead, and a Justice jumper made it 5-2. Joshua Joe had a jumper at 17:02 for the five-point lead, 7-2. At 14:11, Colin Roberts put in a layup to hold onto a four-point lead, 9-5. UMHB responded in four minutes with a 13-1 run and an eight-point lead, 18-10. A Roberts layup at 5:59 cut the lead to four, 20-16, but four minutes later, UMHB had a 13-point lead, 33-20, on a 13-4 run. ETBU ended the final two minutes on a 9-4 run as Justice had seven of the nine points to trail, 37-29, at the half.
 
Within six, 41-35, on a Justice jumper at 17:18, ETBU came no closer than that. At the 13:44 mark, ETBU was still within six, 46-40, on a Justice free throw, and UMHB had just a nine-point lead, 54-45, with 10:15 to go. In three minutes, UMHB went on a 12-0 run for a 21-point lead, 66-45, as ETBU didn't hit a shot from the floor for over four minutes. Justice had a layup to pull ETBU within 19, 68-49, at 6:27 and was within 18, 70-52, at 5:30. UMHB went by 21 at 5:06, never letting the lead slip below 20 points the rest of the way. They took their largest lead of 25 points with 40 seconds left, 82-57.
 
ETBU will take on LeTourneau University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the final regular season game.
