MARSHALL, Texas – A four-run eighth inning by the University of Texas Dallas was the decisive factor in the game as No. 13/19 East Texas Baptist University's comeback fell short, 9-6. ETBU came from behind to take a 6-5 lead in the seventh but gave up four runs in the top of the eighth. ETBU is now 15-9.
Luke Bumpus led ETBU with three hits, including a home run that scored two runs and drove in two RBI.
Hunter Rumachik added a double for two RBI as
William Howard had two hits and one RBI.
Luke Finn also had an RBI.
Jagger Neely went five innings for the no-decision, striking out one, allowing three hits, and giving up two earned runs.
Carson Speegle took the loss in two innings of work as six earned runs were scored on five hits.
Nolan Bushko finished the final two innings, not allowing a run and recording two strikeouts.
After three scoreless innings, UTD scored its first run in the fourth. They made it 2-0 in the fifth, but Finn was walked home in the bottom of the inning for an RBI, cutting the lead to one, 2-1. UTD added two more runs in the sixth inning on a home run, but Rumachik countered in the bottom half of the inning with a double to the middle, scoring
Ben Lea and Bumpas, bringing the score within one, 4-3.
Howard singled down the first base line in the sixth inning to tie the game at four, only to see UTD hit a home run in the top of the seventh to retake the lead, 5-4. Bumpus rallied ETBU in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run, giving them their only lead, 6-5. UTD responded with four runs in the top of the eighth to end any ETBU comeback.
ETBU will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 12:00 p.m. vs. UTD.
