MARSHALL, Texas – In their first extra innings game of the year, no. 25/26 East Texas Baptist University gave up three runs in the 11
th inning as Chapman University took the final game of the series, 7-4. ETBU won the overall series after taking the double header on Friday. Today's game also marked James Morgan Day as ETBU honored senior
Matthew Irwin for wearing no. 16 all season.
ETBU was down early but rallied with three runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by
Nathan Harmon's home run, but Chapman secured the victory with a three-run 11th inning. ETBU also had 12 hits in the game.
Joaquin Costa delivered an impressive performance with four hits, including a home run and a double, while also scoring two runs and driving in one.
Raef Wright contributed with two hits and two RBIs, adding a stolen base.
Colby Wilson drove in two runs with a double and reached base via a walk.
Nolan Bushko pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out three batters for the no decision.
Anthony Tellez contributed 1.2 innings in relief, yielding one run on two hits and recording a strikeout.
Brayden Hodge took the loss giving up four earned runs over 3.1 innings, recording one strikeout.
Chapman took an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning, making the score 1-0. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning holding ETBU scoreless through the first five innings but came alive in the sixth inning. Costa brought in the first run of the inning, setting the stage for Wright to drive in two runs with a double to right field, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Tigers after the sixth.
In the eighth inning, Chapman tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single. ETBU responded in the bottom half with Costa hitting a solo home run, reclaiming the lead at 4-3. Chapman leveled the score again in the ninth with an RBI single to make it, 4-4.
The game went into extra innings, and in the 11th inning, Chapman surged ahead scoring three runs in the top of the 11
th. ETBU left runners on base in both the ninth and 10
th innings.
ETBU will take the field at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, against St. Thomas Houston in Sugar Land, Texas.
