SUGAR LAND, Texas — Getting a taste of minor league play, No. 25/26 East Texas Baptist University (4-1) secured a commanding 7-0 victory over the University of St. Thomas Houston (3-4) on Tuesday at Constellation Field, which is home to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. ETBU's offense broke open the game with three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, supported by a strong pitching performance that limited St. Thomas to five hits and no runs.
Brody Tewers tallied two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.
Raef Wright crossed home plate twice and swiped a base.
Nathan Harmon recorded a hit and an RBI, contributing with a sacrifice fly.
Connor Massimini added a hit, a run, and drew a walk.
Kaden Wharton added a RBI.
ETBU's pitching staff delivered a strong performance as Vincent Armellio started the game, pitching one inning without allowing a hit or run, striking out one batter.
Garrett Walker followed, pitching one inning, surrendering one hit, but also striking out one.
Tyler Bogusz was efficient, pitching 1 2/3 innings with one hit allowed, striking out two as Jaxon Thompson went 0.2 innings.
Aiden Leonard contributed two innings, allowing just one hit and
Carter May closed with 1 1/3 innings, striking out two batters, and not allowing any hits or runs.
The scoring began in the second inning when Wright walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Tewers, providing ETBU a 1-0 lead after two innings.
In the seventh inning, ETBU extended its lead with three runs. Harmon singled to right center, followed by a single from Tewers.
Carson Livesay reached on a fielder's choice, and Wharton singled, scoring Livesay and Tewers and came home on an outfield fielding error to make it 4-0.
The eighth inning saw ETBU adding three more runs.
Carter Nannini and Massimini both walked, and
Justin Flannery, running for Nannini, scored on a sacrifice fly by Harmon. A wild pitch allowed Massimini to score, and Wright crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Tewers, making it 7-0.
May struck out the last two batters of the inning to end the game.
ETBU's next series is on Friday, Feb. 20, when they travel to Jackson, Miss., to take on Belhaven. The game is set for 5 p.m.
