GEORGETOWN, Texas – Taking one of the best regional teams in Texas down to the final points, East Texas Baptist University came up shy of the upset over Southwestern University (TX), 4-3. ETBU won the doubles point with the match coming down to the final two matches at no. 5 and no. 6. ETBU is now 0-1 on the year.
ETBU fell in the first match in doubles at no. 3, 6-0, but bounced back with a win at no. 2, 6-4, as
Kristyn Dunn and
Jazmyne Ford-Schartner won.
Monique Ybarra and Fernanda Ruiz-Burkart pulled off the tiebreaking win, 7-6 (7-3), to go up 1-0.
ETBU took a 2-1 lead after three sets as Dunn won the first match at no. 4, 6-4, 6-1, over Lilly Perkins. Ybarra, who is ranked no. 19 in the region for singles, won the no. 1 match, 6-2, 6-2, for the 3-0 lead. SU the won the no. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1, for their first point. SU then won the no. 3 set, 6-0, 6-1, to pull within one, 3-2. Ford-Schartner battled at no. 5 in a tiebreaker but fell, 3-6, 6-4, 5-10, as SU tied the match. It came down to the no. 6 match as
Amelia Anding fell 0-6, 6-7 (1-7).
ETBU will host Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
