MARSHALL, Texas — After allowing four runs in the first two innings, no. 24 East Texas Baptist University battled from behind against Maryville College (Tenn.) as the Scots held off the Tigers, 5-3, on Friday evening. Despite out-hitting Maryville with nine hits, including three doubles and a triple, the Tigers could not overcome the Scots strong pitching from the beginning.
Carson Livesay scored one run and collected two hits, including a double.
Connor Massimini crossed home plate twice and added a hit and a walk in the game.
Kahne Nolen contributed with a double and a triple, driving in one run.
Kaden Wharton reached base with a hit and a walk.
Tyler Bogusz pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs while striking out four.
Aiden Leonard contributed two innings in relief, yielding a hit and one earned run, striking out two with one walk.
In the opening inning, Maryville took an early lead on a two-out three-run homer for the early 3-0 lead. ETBU responded with Nolen's RBI double that scored
Connor Massimini, making it 3–1 at the end of the first inning. Maryville added one run in the top of second inning to extend their lead to three runs, 4-1.
In the fifth inning, the Tigers rallied to close the gap. Livesay doubled to center field, followed by Massimini's single. Nolen was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
Jobee Boone's sacrifice fly allowed Livesay to score, and
Carter Nannini's sacrifice fly brought in Massimini, narrowing the score to 4–3 after five innings. ETBU had chances in the seventh and eighth innings with the tying run on third base with two outs but each time could not bring in the run.
The ninth inning saw Maryville extend its lead on a bunt single to drive in a run, making it 5–3. ETBU went one-two-three in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
ETBU will host Maryville on Saturday, March 28 at noon in a double header.
