ABILENE, Texas — Staring American Southwest Conference play with a dominating performance, East Texas Baptist University (19-10, 1-0) shut out Hardin-Simmons University (16-10, 0-1) with a decisive 12-0 victory on Wednesday at Hunter Field. ETBU amassed 17 hits, including three home runs, while shutting out the home team with a one-hit performance.
Carson Livesay scored three runs, collected three hits, and drove in two runs, including a home run.
Connor Massimini contributed with two hits, three RBIs, and a home run, while also scoring twice.
Kahne Nolen recorded three RBIs and hit a home run.
Carter Nannini added two hits and a RBI as
Jobee Boone also provided two hits.
Nathan Harmon collected three hits, on a double, and a RBI, as
Joaquin Costa earned three hits and a run scored.
Raef Wright finished with one RBI.
Tyler Bogusz delivered an impressive complete game performance on the mound for ETBU, pitching seven innings while allowing just one hit and no earned runs. He issued four walks but managed to keep Hardin-Simmons scoreless, striking out three batters in the process. Bogusz improved his season record to 3-2 with the victory.
The game began with Livesay reaching on a single and later scoring on a passed ball, giving ETBU an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The third inning saw a surge in scoring for ETBU, starting with solo home runs from Livesay and Massimini. Nolen added to the tally with a two-run homer, bringing in Nannini, and pushing the lead to 5-0 by the end of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Wright drove in Massimini with a single, extending the lead to 6-0.
ETBU continued to dominate in the fifth with Boone's triple setting the stage. Boone scored on a sacrifice fly by Massimini, and
Juan Ortigoza crossed home plate following a hit by pitch and a walk, furthering the lead to 8-0.
The sixth inning saw another offensive burst. Costa tripled and scored on Harmon's double. Livesay added an RBI single, and Massimini contributed with another RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Nannini capped off the inning, bringing the score to 12-0.
Bogusz retired the side in the second, fifth, and seventh innings helping to seal the shutout victory.
The Tigers will play a double header in Abilene, Texas, vs. Hardin-Simmons again on Thursday, April 9 at 4 p.m.
