Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – After four innings of close baseball, Chapman University scored six runs in three innings as they finished the game over East Texas Baptist University, 8-1. ETBU brought in their only run in the seventh inning.
ETBU is now 0-2 on the year and will finish the three-game series with Chapman on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. In the game, ETBU produced five hits from five different batters. Ashley Dukes, Dynas Doud, Conner Combs, Zach Compton, and Chris Hawkins all had a hit. Dukes recorded the lone RBI of the game.
Zack Tampke received the start going 4.1 innings striking out three and gave up two earned runs on three hits. Matt Lefler went one inning and let in two runs, one earned while Ernest Perez followed with an inning of work letting in three runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Tanner Matthews finished the final 2.2 innings giving up just one earned run on three hits.
ETBU had a chance to strike early in the first inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Two of ETBU's five hits in the game came in the first inning from Dukes and Combs. Dukes was on third, Combs on second and Compton on first when the inning ended on a pop out. Chapman struck the very next inning on the second pitch with a home run over the left field fence.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, still down just 1-0, ETBU was given another chance to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out. Compton started the inning by getting hit by Chapman's pitcher and Bates followed with an infield error as ETBU had two runners on and no outs. After a sac bunt by Ben Beltran advanced the runners to scoring position, there was a strikeout and then Cody Wilk walked to load the bases. The threat of scoring ended with a fly ball to right field as ETBU left the bases loaded for a second time in the game.
Chapman followed with six runs on six hits and ETBU errors for a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Dukes grounded out to bring in Jaxon Rader for the only run of the game.
Overall, ETBU left nine runners on base in the game and went 0-of-6 with runners in scoring position. ETBU did turn two double plays in the game, though. Matt Smith earned the win for Chapman on six innings of work and Jared Love and John Wiehe both homered.
The final game of the series is at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at Woods Field as ETBU will try for their first win of 2015.
