Game 1 – UTD 12, ETBU 8
After a scoreless first inning, UTD took advantage of ETBU defensive miscues to score three runs in the second inning. However, Combs would tie the score with a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning. But the Comets answered with four runs to take a 7-3 lead. ETBU had the chance to take the lead with the bases loaded following a walk that made it 7-4 but a strikeout ended the inning leaving the runners on.
After UTD pushed two more runs across, Bates would drill a two-run homer to cut the lead to 9-6. Both teams would be held scoreless in the fifth inning before UTD pushed three runs in the top of the sixth. However, Bates would hit his second two-run homer to make it 12-8. ETBU would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh but a ground out came to end the game.
Game 3 – UTD 5, ETBU 3
ETBU struck first after Bates had a double and advanced to third on the wild pitch. Doud would send him home with an RBI groundout. Pierce would follow a pattern for three shutout innings in which he would leave runners on the base, but escape with no trouble. However, in the fourth, UTD would take the lead with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to make it 2-1. ETBU would load the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but they failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
A two-run shot by UTD's Nick Marti gave UTD a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning. For most of the game, ETBU's bats went to sleep as UTD pitcher Jonathan May held the Tigers at bay until the eighth inning. The Comets pushed a run across in the eighth inning for a 5-1 lead. ETBU would load the bases in the eighth inning and score a run on a walk cutting it to 5-2. However, ETBU's rally came to an end on a line drive shot to UTD rightfielder David McKenzie.
But the Tigers weren't done just yet. After Sumpter and Bates got on bases, Doud would deliver a single that scored Sumpter and ETBU had the momentum. Unfortunately, that momentum was snuffed when the game ended on a double play.
ETBU will travel to Abilene, Texas, for a three-game set against Hardin Simmons next weekend. The first game starts on Friday at 7:00 pm. Game two and three will start at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively.
