#TIGERSWIN: ETBU Sweeps Complete Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MARSHALL, Texas – In a tale of two games, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team used incredible pitching, strong hitting, and good base running to complete the sweep of Belhaven. With the win from Friday as well, ETBU now has a four-game winning streak while improving their record to 16-8 overall and 7-5 in the American Southwest Conference East Division play. It was also the first complete series sweep of the season for ETBU.

In game one, ETBU grinded out a 4-3 win. For ETBU, eight players would each get one hit including RBI by Dynas Doud (HR), Zach Compton, and Kameron Sumrall. Dylan Sumpter and Doud would also score two of the four runs for ETBU. Ashley Dukes received his first win of the year with five complete innings pitched in which he allowed three runs on six hits, walked two, and struck out five batters. Jimmy Russo would get the save for ETBU going two innings allowing two hits and striking out two.

In the second game, ETBU's bats were out and about as they delivered a 9-1 victory. Tyler Bates, Conner Combs (two RBIs, HR) and Jaxon Rader would each have two hits in the game while Josh Warbington would hit a home run in the game. Cody Pierce had a complete-game win going the entire nine innings while striking out six batters.

Game 1 – ETBU 4, BU 3

ETBU struck first in the bottom of the first when Sumrall hit a sacrifice fly to score Sumpter from third. In the second, Belhaven took the lead with a home run by Adam Kowalczyk plus a couple of errors by ETBU, which made the score 2-1. Kowalczyk delivered an RBI single in the third inning to make it 3-1. But ETBU would tie the score when Compton singled in a run and Sumrall reached on an error by the rightfielder.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Dukes was able to battle out of trouble in the top of the fifth inning. Doud would then homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to give ETBU the 4-3 lead. Russo came in and preserved the lead although he would get help from his defense like a line drive double play by Conner Combs in the seventh inning. Belhaven did have the tying run on first when a grounder to Sumpter ended the game.

Game 2 – ETBU 9, BU 1

After two scoreless innings, ETBU would break through first with a single by Compton to score Bates. Belhaven tied it in the top of the fourth on a single. But in the bottom half, ETBU would get two runs on a single by Rader and a balk called. After four innings, it was 3-1 in favor of the Tigers. One inning later, Combs (two-run) and Warbington (solo) would each homer back to back to make the score 6-1.

A wild pitch scored Bates in the sixth inning and the lead was 7-1 in ETBU's favor. The eighth inning would see Doud deliver a double to score Bates before Mason Aldredge singled to score the ninth run. Pierce would get the final three outs and ETBU came away with the win.

ETBU will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Shreveport to take on Centenary in a three game series.
