Box Score 2 ALPINE, Texas – The momentum for the East Texas Baptist University baseball team continued as they compiled a sweep of the double header against the Sul Ross State University Lobos. ETBU's sweep of Sul Ross not only gives them a six-game winning streak, but also brings their record to 22-11 and 13-5 overall.
In game one, ETBU delivered a 7-2 win in the seven-inning game. Leading the way was Zach Compton with two hits and Dynas Doud who had two RBIs in a one-for-three performance. Conner Combs also had two RBIs in two hits while Jaxon Rader had another one as well. Ashley Dukes got his third win of the season with 5.2 innings pitched in which he allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four batters. Jimmy Russo came in to finish the job in 1.1 innings pitched striking out two batters.
A five-run seventh inning proved to be the difference for ETBU in their second game as they finished the series with a 6-2 win. Combs led the charge with two hits and an RBI while Dylan Sumpter, Doud, and Compton would have RBIs of their own. Cody Pierce pitched five complete innings allowing one run on six hits. But it was Chad Boudreaux who got the win with three innings of relief allowing a run on two hits. Russo would get one shutout inning without giving up a hit.
Game 1 – ETBU 7, SRSU 2
Neither team would score through the first two innings. In the third, Doud would deliver a two-run double to give ETBU a 2-0 lead. It would be 3-0 when Combs would single in a run later in the inning. After a scoreless fourth, Combs would add to ETBU's lead with another single making it 4-0. Rader's RBI came an inning on a single and it was 5-0.
Dukes, who pitched brilliantly through five shutout innings, would be affected with two runs on defensive miscues by ETBU. But Russo would come in and shut the door on the Lobos' rally. Sul Ross did not help themselves in the top of the seventh as ETBU added two more runs on wild pitches. Russo helped sealed the victory in the first game.
Game 2 – ETBU 6, SRSU 2
ETBU struck first with a run on a hit by Tyler Bates and a wild pitch that gave them a 1-0 lead. Pierce would hold the Lobos scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when an RBI triple brought in the tying run. After a pitching change, Boudreaux would hold the Lobos down for three innings. He would be rewarded with a five-run outburst in the seventh.
RBI doubles by Sumpter, Doud, and Compton, a wild pitch, and a single by Combs gave ETBU a 6-1 lead. The Lobos could only muster an RBI double of their own in the bottom of the eighth, but could not get any closer as Russo shut them down in the ninth.
ETBU returns home for a three game series against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Game one starts Friday at 7:00 pm while Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm.
