Box Score 2 MARSHALL, Texas – Offense was a dominant force as the East Texas Baptist University baseball team completed a sweep of LeTourneau University taking the games 16-5 and 18-11. ETBU moves to 19-11 overall and 10-5 in the American Southwest Conference. In the series overall, ETBU outscored LETU 42-20 in runs while they would hit seven home runs today and eight overall in three games.
ETBU exploded for 16 runs in game one as they ran away with the game vs. LeTourneau 16-5. The Combs brothers of Conner and Casey Combs led the way as Conner Combs went three-for-four with two home runs for six RBI while Casey Combs had a grand slam to go with two hits. Zach Compton also had a three-run home run while Dynas Doud had three hits as well. Ashley Dukes got the win by going five innings in which he gave up three runs on six hits while striking out four. Chad Boudreaux also got two innings allowing a two-run home run and struck out a better.
The momentum would carry over into game two as ETBU won a slugfest 18-11 to complete the sweep. Dynas Doud led the way with a three-for-five performance as with three RBI while Zach Compton would go two-for-four with four RBI. Cody Pierce took the ball for game three, but after 2.1 innings pitched allowing seven runs on eight hits, he was pulled for Jacob Wadle, who would get 0.2 innings pitched allowing a run on a hit. Logan Sprinkle would get his first win of the season in relief with 4.1 innings pitched allowing three runs on six hits. Jimmy Russo picked up his fifth save of the season with 1.2 innings pitched.
Game 1 – ETBU 16, LETU 5
LeTourneau started off with three runs. After one in the first, a two-run double in the third made it 3-0 for the Yellow Jackets. But ETBU responded with two runs on an error by LETU and a single by Bates. ETBU would take the lead on a home run by Conner Combs to make it 4-3. Conner Combs and Compton would each hit two run homers to make it 9-3 after five innings.
A two-run homer by LETU made it 9-5 in the top of the sixth. But ETBU answered with seven runs in the bottom half. Following an RBI double by Doud and an RBI single by Conner Combs, younger brother Casey Combs would hit a grand slam to make it 16-5. Boudreaux shut the door on LETU and ETBU came away with the win.
Game 2 – ETBU 18, LETU 11
Home runs keyed ETBU's offense for the game as Compton in the first inning and Josh Warbington in the second inning would each have a two-run home run to make it 4-1 after two innings. Both teams would score six runs in the third inning and one in the fourth inning and it was 11-8 after four. In the third, Doud would deliver a home run while Brice Winter would have RBI hits in the third and fourth innings. After two more runs came in for ETBU, LETU added one more and the score was 13-9 on a solo home run.
Two innings later, a two-run home run made the score 13-11 as the Yellow Jackets cut into the lead. But ETBU would have a five run eighth inning on RBI hits by Doud, Compton, and Kam Sumrall. Russo then shut the door on LETU to pick up the sweep.
ETBU will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Alpine, Texas, for another big American Southwest Conference series starting on Friday.
