SHREVEPORT, Louisiana – It took all three periods plus overtime and seven rounds of a penalty shootout, but the East Texas Baptist University hockey team came away with a 5-4 win against the Dallas Baptist University Patriots. This improves ETBU's winning streak to five games as they sit at 8-3.
The game started off on the wrong side for ETBU as they gave up the first goal to Spencer Ericksen just eight minutes into the game. Twelve minutes later, ETBU tied the score courtesy of
Skyler Spiller. Both teams had chances to take the lead, but were denied and the first period ended at 1-1. ETBU started the second period on the positive side just a minute and a half in as
Riley Knott nailed a backhander to give ETBU a 2-1 lead. But that wouldn't last for long as Kaleb Ziegler tied it up on a deflection. With time winding down, ETBU appeared to have the goal to go ahead, but it was wiped off because it came after the horn sounded. So the teams went into the third period tied at two.
The third period had the same repeated pattern as the first period as DBU struck the go ahead goal from Trenton Lee. But ETBU answered back with a power play goal from Knott who tied the game with twelve minutes left. Four minutes later, captain
Carson Combs gave ETBU the 4-3 lead with a slap shot. It would be another four minutes before the Patriots tied it at four on a goal by Weston Shattuck. Neither team could muster any chances in the final minutes as the game went into overtime.
Despite chances on both sides, five minutes of overtime was not enough to determine a winner. So the game moved into a best-of-three penalty shootout. In the second round, Spiller scored to give ETBU a 2-1 lead in the shootout. But DBU captain Tim Skupien answered in the third round and the shootout resumed. For the next three rounds, goaltenders
Nick Bozzuto and DBU's Cooper Cothran kept both teams off the score sheet. Finally in round seven, Combs would deliver the winner as ETBU won 5-4.
The two teams will meet tomorrow at 11:30 am at George's Pond in Shreveport.
