Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – Falling on Friday night in the home opener, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team could not overcome an early deficit to Centenary College falling, 10-0. Centenary improves to 4-1 on the year, while ETBU falls to 2-2.
Centenary got on the board first in the second inning, scoring on an error and then scored four runs in the fourth inning after Ian Graham led the inning off with a homerun. Centenary would scratch a run in the sixth, and added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to push their lead to 10-0. ETBU would get runners on base throughout the night, but could not find the timely hit to get on the board.
ETBU had four hits on the night, led by Drew Helberg and Kam Sumrall who each had a double in the game. Zach Compton was 1-of-3 with a single and a walk, and Landen Barns got on base twice. ETBU was 0-of-10 with runners in scoring position, and 0-of-13 with runners on base.
Kyle Loson was tagged with the loss, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing five runs (three earned). Zach Pollard also threw 4.0 innings in relief, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.
Centenary was led by Cody Crowder who was 5-of-5 from the plate with three runs batted in. Graham finished 4-of-5 with a home run and two runs batted in. Kaleb Kirk gave the Gents a strong start, going 8.0 innings and striking out 10 batters, allowing just four hits.
ETBU will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a double header against Centenary. The first pitch will be at 1:00 p.m., with the second game following 30 minutes after the first game concludes.
