#TIGERSWIN: ETBU Sweeps Double Header vs. Dallas

MARSHALL, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University team hosted a midweek double header against the University of Dallas and promptly swept the Crusaders to move to 8-4 overall this season. ETBU won game one on a walkoff double from Zach Gartner and took game two after a three-run second inning that led to a 7-1 win. ETBU has now won six games in a row.

GAME 1: ETBU 7, UD 6

Dallas got on the board first in the top half of the first inning, when Seth Hanson and Luke Boylson hit back-to-back homeruns to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Dallas added a run in the third inning to move the lead to 3-0. Gartner launched his first homerun of the day to bring ETBU within two runs, 3-1. Landen Barns doubled home Jaxon Rader, Compton singled home Barns, and Garnter hit his second homerun in as many innings to give ETBU a 5-3 lead. Dallas got two runs back in the top of the fifth inning on two wild pitches, and took the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single. Josh Warbington tied the game on a solo homerun to left field, and ETBU would walk off the game in the bottom of the seventh on the walkoff double from Gartner scoring Conner Combs.

Gartner finished the day 4-of-4 with two homeruns and four runs batted in. Rader, Barns, Combs, Compton, Warbington, and Dylan Sumpter each had one hit in the game. Barns, Compton, and Warbington picked up one RBI each.

Garrett Penny picked up his first win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings. Penny allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters in the win. Kam Sumrall started the game and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs.

Boylson had three of the seven hits, and had one of the three runs batted in for Dallas. JP Fasone had two hits in the game. Blake Palmer was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings of relief.

GAME 2: ETBU 7, UD 1

The second game of the double header was not as a dramatic, but ETBU used a three run second inning to cruise to their sixth straight win.

Casey Combs and Warbington hit back-to-back doubles to open up the scoring in the second inning, plating three runs on the two hits. Dallas would use the second homerun of the day from Hanson for their only tally of the game. ETBU would respond with four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to close out scoring for the day.

Casey Combs had three hits in three trips to the plate, with two doubles and four runs batted in. Warbington and Gartner each had one more hit for the day, and Warbington had one RBI in the second game. Zackery Pierce picked up the win in his collegiate pitching debut, pitching 5.0 innings in relief and one allowed only one run on one hit.

Kyle Gamez was given the loss after his start, moving to 0-1 on the season. Gamez pitched 2.1 innings and allowed three hits and three runs. Hanson had two hits including his solo homerun, and Jordan Stickler and Josh Abalos had one hit apiece.

ETBU will remain at home this weekend as they host Southwestern University for a three-game series. There will be a single game played on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and a double header starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
