Box Score HAWKINS, Texas – It was round two for the East Texas Baptist University baseball team against Jarvis Christian College for the 2017 season. ETBU would manage to get runners on base all game, but could not capitalize as they fell on the road 5-3 against the Bulldogs.
ETBU got on the board first with an RBI fielder's choice from Kam Sumrall to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Jarvis tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a suicide squeeze that resulted in a hit. Brice Winter delivered an RBI single to bring home Zach Gartner to retake the lead 2-1 over the Bulldogs. Jarvis answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab the lead from ETBU. An RBI double and fielder's choice gave Jarvis a 3-2 lead going into the final three innings. Jarvis tacked on two more runs on an ETBU error to push their lead to 5-2. Zach Compton tried to spark a rally with a ninth inning solo homerun, but the comeback from ETBU would fall short.
ETBU had 12 hits as a team in the contest. Five different Tigers had two hits: Conner Combs, Compton, Gartner, Sumrall, and Winter. Gartner reached base four times as he walked two times as well, and scored two runs. ETBU would leave 13 runners on base to provide the difference maker in the game.
ETBU did not allow a hit until the fifth inning as: Derrick Findley, Garrett Penny, and Chad Boudreaux combined for 4.0 no-hit innings. Jordan O'Bannon was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings in relief.
CJ Tyler and Stephon Miller each had two hits in the contest to pace the Bulldog offense. Alejandro Guerrero picked up the win after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits.
ETBU will return to action this weekend against the University of the Ozarks. ETBU and Ozarks will play a single game on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and then will conclude the series with a double header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
